One Touch Studio Q&A: What’s it like to work with a brand designer?
For many potential clients, the branding process is a tad mystifying – especially when I tell them there’s more to it than just designing a new logo!
At its core, branding is about figuring out ‘who’ your business is, who you’re trying to speak to, and what you stand for. Equipped with this information, I then go behind the scenes and reconcile the personality we’ve developed together with a beautiful new brand, complete with typography, a colour palette, photography direction, illustrations, and yes – a brand-spankin’-new logo.
To give you some more insight into the branding process, I sat down to chat with one of my recent clients and now-friends, Charlotte from Charlotte Borland Content.
Hey, Charlotte! Tell me a bit about your biz and the challenges you were facing before we worked together.
CB: Hi Dani! I’m a freelance copywriter and content strategist, which means I write things and come up with creative content ideas for businesses of all kinds, including service providers and ecommerce stores.
Before working with One Touch Studio, my brand was just a shell. I’d been freelancing on the side for many years alongside an office job, but I had just recently gone full-time as a freelancer. So, I knew I needed to nail down a cohesive visual identity that could be carried across my social media, website, and brand collateral.
And why did you pick One Touch Studio for the job?
CB: Well, we’d already worked together on some of your content, and I knew that because our personalities clicked so well, it would be an easy process. You’re a great communicator and a literal joy to work with. Plus, One Touch Studio’s work felt very reflective of what I wanted to do visually for CBC – something fun, bright, engaging, and unique.
How did you feel about your brand before and after the design process?
CB: Before we worked together, I felt pretty blah… I had a very basic, god-awful logo that I’d been using for at least five years, and that was really it. I knew that I needed something eye-catching to cut through the noise in the market and really endear the kinds of customers I wanted to attract. After working together, I feel abso-bloody-lutely amazing about my brand! You totally nailed the essence of me and created a personal brand that feels true and layered. While I’ve still got a ways to go when it comes to actually implementing the brand, I get excited every time I look at it or show it to a friend or client.
What was your favourite part of the branding process?
CB: Ooh, honestly so many aspects of the branding process were really fun! I loved the little brand personality games we played at the start – they were really engaging and got me thinking deeply about my brand’s personality. Because CBC is a personal brand in a way, it forced me to reflect on who I am and what I bring to the table as a service provider, and I think that introspection is always a good thing.
What was the hardest part of the branding process?
CB: Hmmmm… giving you any constructive feedback whatsoever, because I didn’t have any?! 🤣 The second I got my brand for review, I was like yep, I love this – no notes. But in all seriousness, giving feedback truly was the hardest part of the process. You really have to think critically about your brand, not just now but in its future states. You took on my feedback so well, and as much as I found this part of the process difficult, working with you to perfect the brand was very easy.
Can you describe your new brand in three words?
CB: Don’t ask a copywriter to do anything in three words! Okay, kidding. My three words would be: lively, badass, and true. Sorry for swearing.
How has your new branding impacted your business?
CB: While I’m still in the middle of launching my brand to the world, it’s already had an impact, which is hugely exciting to see considering there’s much more to be done on my end. I’ve had existing and new clients comment on the branding and how it feels so authentic to who I am, both as an employee/colleague and as a human. That’s the goal, at the end of the day – create something that visually represents me in all my sassy, creative, chatty glory.
How do you see your new brand helping you achieve your dream life?
CB: Well, it already feels like I’m living my dream life, so this is just the icing on the cake! I envision this new brand making it ten times easier for me to attract and convert clients, and to do a lot of the ‘talking’ when it comes to selling my services and my value as a creative collaborator. And that’s so aligned with my dream life – less time spent hustling, more time spent enjoying the freedom and flexibility that comes with owning your own business.
What advice would you give to other business owners considering working with OTS?
